UPDATE IN RADIOLOGY High resolution (3 T) magnetic resonance neurography of the sciatic nerve

چکیده
Magnetic resonance (MR) neurography refers to a set of techniques that enable the structure of the peripheral nerves and nerve plexuses to be evaluated optimally. New two-dimensional and three-dimensional neurographic sequences, in particular in 3 T scanners, achieve excellent contrast between the nerve and perineural structures. MR neurography makes it possible to distinguish between the normal fascicular pattern of the nerve and anomalies like inflammation, trauma, and tumor that can affect nerves. In this article, we describe the structure of the sciatic nerve, its characteristics on MR neurography, and the most common diseases that affect it. ଝ Please cite this article as: Cejas C, et al. متن کاملMagnetic resonance neurography in extraspinal sciatica.
BACKGROUND Sciatica without evidence of lumbosacral root compression is often attributed to piriformis syndrome. However, specific diagnostic tools have not been available to demonstrate sciatic nerve entrapment by the piriformis muscle. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the use of magnetic resonance (MR) neurography in identifying abnormalities of the sciatic nerve in patients with unexplained sciatica....
متن کاملSciatic neuropathy: findings on magnetic resonance neurography
Injuries of the sciatic nerve are common causes of pain and limitation in the lower limbs. Due to its particular anatomy and its long course, the sciatic nerve is often involved in diseases of the pelvis or leg. In recent years, magnetic resonance neurography has become established as an important tool for the study of peripheral nerves and can be widely applied to the study of the sciatic nerv...
متن کاملNeurography - a new look at the peripheral nervous system
The advent of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) allowed a significant advance in the understanding and evaluation of the central nervous system. However, the peripheral nervous system (PNS)—nerves, ganglia, and roots—continued to be considered “difficult to assess” by radiologists(1). The PNS has been studied through invasive tests, such as electrodiagnostic studies and nerve biopsies, which cau...
متن کاملSciatica of nondisc origin and piriformis syndrome: diagnosis by magnetic resonance neurography and interventional magnetic resonance imaging with outcome study of resulting treatment.
OBJECT Because lumbar magnetic resonance (MR) imaging fails to identify a treatable cause of chronic sciatica in nearly 1 million patients annually, the authors conducted MR neurography and interventional MR imaging in 239 consecutive patients with sciatica in whom standard diagnosis and treatment failed to effect improvement. METHODS After performing MR neurography and interventional MR imag...
